There were rumors circulating back in January that Iona Prep and Somers might come together for an unprecedented matchup to open the 2025 high school football season. After the details were finalized, the anticipation sparked a lively conversation in both locker rooms.
“We all wanted this game to happen,” Somers Tuskers lineman Jaron Faulkner said. “We talk about it all day. This game is all we think about right now.”
There are reputations at stake.
“It’s a game that means a lot to us,” Iona Prep Gaels quarterback Julian Guzman said. “We definitely have a lot of pressure on us. We have more to lose, I would say, so it’s definitely a big game, a big, big game on the schedule.”
These aren’t just traditional football powers.
Iona Prep is the reigning state Catholic school champion. Somers has won three consecutive state public school titles.
