We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved southern hairy-nosed wombat, Kindilan. Born in 1998 at the San Diego Zoo, Kindilan made his way to the Memphis Zoo in January 2000, where he quickly became a cherished favorite of both our guests and staff. For years, he brought joy and comfort to everyone who had the privilege of meeting him. He was often found peacefully sleeping on his back in his burrow or, just as often, wandering through his exhibit, engaging with his exhibit friends. Kindilan’s patience made him a wonderful roommate, as he lived harmoniously with a variety of animals over the years. Kindilan’s keepers grew to love his rewarding, larger-than-life personality, and they knew they had to work for his affection. It wasn’t uncommon for them to sit in his exhibit, talking to him with his heavily armored rear-end facing them.
