Almost a third of Americans have tattoos. More and more, the police officers you see may, too, as across the Des Moines metro, they no longer have to hide them. Police agencies across the metro are loosening longstanding rules on visible tattoos, a move chiefs say reflects changing social norms and a tougher hiring climate. The Des Moines Police Department, with 373 sworn officers and 105 civilian support personnel, is the most recent department in the metro area to ink the shift. The new policy, which took effect in April 2025, now permits visible tattoos and body art that the chief of police determines to be inoffensive.
