The Wellington Cable Car Terminal once saw kererū and at risk-species like kākā collide with glass at an alarming rate. It has now become Aotearoa’s first large-scale bird-safe building with Feather Friendly markers. The wellingtoncablecar Bird Strike Prevention programme, a joint initiative between the not-for-profit urbanwildlifetrust and Wellington Cable Car, has been highly successful, with collisions having gone down by 99%! One of the most heartwarming aspects of the project has been the public support behind it. The Trust, led by Tony Stoddard, generated crowd funding with hundreds of Wellingtonians chipping in nearly half of the $30,000 cost to finish the job. As Tony put it: "Together we can support the restoration of native bird numbers through simple measures like this.
