❗️Mazda isn’t just dreaming of a rotary comeback, they’re designing it straight from the Iconic SP concept. Mazda’s CEO confirmed that the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the Iconic SP concept inspired the revival of the rotary development team. Design chief Masashi Nakayama emphasized the Iconic SP was created with “real intent” to become a production model. The Iconic SP combines a dual-rotor rotary and EV system, producing about 365–370 PS and capable of running on carbon-neutral fuels. Mazda sees the Iconic SP as a modern spiritual successor to the RX-7—not the Miata—with mid-ship proportions and pop-up headlights to match. A twin-rotor rotary in the SP will function as a generator in a range-extender hybrid setup, not directly driving the wheels.
