September is National Suicide Prevention Month.
I have a semicolon tattoo on my left wrist... not because I love punctuation and proper grammar, but because it’s a message of affirmation to myself to keep fighting against depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.
The semicolon means my story is still ongoing. It reminds me to take a breath.
Almost 10 years ago, I nearly took my last breath.
My story isn’t any more special than anyone else’s. I’m not a celebrity or a professional athlete with a platform to share my experience and change the lives of thousands of people with one tweet.
Regardless of the platforms, a stigma remains about depression and suicide - particularly among men. Being a “real” man means you don’t suffer in silence.
