A recent wave of gallery shutdowns has upended the art world. This week, Kasmin and Clearing galleries are the latest victims, releasing back-to-back announcements of their closures. Manhattan’s Kasmin Gallery, which represented and exhibited artists like Joel Shapiro, Diana Al-Hadid, Judith Bernstein, and the estates of William N. Copley and Jackson Pollock, will close its doors after 35 years. President Nicholas Olney and Head of Sales Eric Gleason will transition the business into their own gallery, Olney Gleason, to be founded this fall. As for Clearing Gallery, founder Olivier Babin is closing up shop in New York City and Los Angeles after announcing there’s “no viable path forward” in an Instagram post on August 7. Founded in Brooklyn in 2011, Clearing built a roster of emerging and mid-career artists that included Marguerite Humeau, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Harold Ancart, and Calvin Marcus.
