The City of Toronto Archives remembers prolific Toronto photographer April Hickox. April Hickox was a lens-based artist, teacher, and independent curator. Born in Oakville, Ontario in 1955, she studied photography and graphic design at the Twickenham College of Technology in the UK (1973-1974), and photography and printmaking at the Ontario College of Art (1974-1978). She was a lifelong Toronto Island resident. Hickox worked with photography, film, video, and installation to explore themes of memory and narrative histories through still lives, landscapes, and portraiture. Her work has been widely exhibited across Canada and appears in major Canadian collections including the Canadian Council Art Bank, the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, and the Toronto Dominion Bank.
