Subways on Bloor - 100 years ago? Yes and no... In fact, 'subway' was the term used for railway underpasses, and this parade celebrated the elimination of level crossings on Bloor between Lansdowne and Dundas. With the new 'subways' in place, the city could finally enjoy a seamless east-west transit route. The parade - held on August 24, 1925 and reported on in the Globe on August 25 - travelled from the Prince Edward Viaduct to Jane Street, and was followed by festivities in High Park. The Globe headline described Bloor as a "dense river of happy humanity" along the route. 1. Bloor Subway parade, old electric streetcar and trailer, August 24, 1925.
