Out of all the positive reactions Lilly Rile received over her pencil sketch of Neil Armstrong, feedback from the legendary
#Purdue astronaut’s family thrilled her the most.
Rile, a PurdueCCE junior, drew the sketch to help publicize the July 20 event in Washington, D.C., where Purdue introduced the Neil Armstrong Space Prize, a prestigious award that will honor space innovation.
Armstrong’s son Rick shared his approval when he met Rile at the event — where space industry leaders, astronauts and Purdue alumni gathered at the NationalBuildingMuseum to discuss the university’s role in the future of space exploration.
“I got to talk with him and his wife, and they were both lovely and very gracious. He said he thought it bore strong resemblance,” Rile says of the sketch, which took about 15 hours to complete.
