Did you know this? 😮
Traffic lights don’t magically know when you’re there, your car has to trigger them.
Most intersections use inductive loop sensors, coils of wire buried under the pavement.
When your car’s metal sits over the loop, it disturbs a magnetic field, signaling the light controller.
If you stop too far forward or behind the detection zone, the sensor won’t register your car.
That’s why some lights seem “stuck”—the system simply doesn’t know you’re waiting.
Motorcycles and bikes can be harder to detect, though modern systems are tuned for them.
Newer intersections may use cameras or radar, but the same rule applies: you need to be in the right spot.
