Meet Walter Ram, a courageous veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a WWII prisoner of war, and Purple Heart recipient. Born in 1923 in Nogales, AZ, Walter joined the military at just 16, faking his age to serve.
As a radioman/gunner, he flew numerous missions and faced harrowing experiences - including being shot down and captured by German forces. He endured life as a POW in the notorious Stalag 17, where he faced starvation and brutal conditions.
Despite the hardships, Walter’s spirit never faltered. He was liberated by General Patton’s army and returned home weighing just 97 pounds, forever changed but resilient as ever.
Walter was the guest speaker at this year’s Prisoners of War and Missing in Action Recognition Day ceremony at the Pima Air and Space museum, where he spoke about his experiences to Airmen from davismonthan_afb.
