Twenty years ago today was the Danzinger Bridge shooting of ‘05, when a group of unarmed, Black, Hurricane Katrina survivors were shot at by the police as they went to get supplies. Two were killed and four were injured. The case was immediately covered up by the New Orleans police.
And now two decades years later, on the anniversary of this outrageous breach of human life and justice, Trump is threatening to deploy the National Guard to supposedly clean up New Orleans. Here’s the truth: More law enforcement does not protect Black life or make our communities safer. In fact, increased police presence puts Black people in jeopardy. After Hurricane Katrina, when protection, aid, and resources were needed the most, the police opened fire on Black people just trying to survive, opting to protect the wealthy and private property instead of defending human beings. This is not about public safety but about control.
