A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration unlawfully cut off about $2.2 billion in research grants to Harvard University, handing the school a major legal victory.
U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston found the administration retaliated against Harvard for resisting demands to reshape its governance and programs to fit the White House’s agenda.
While acknowledging the university had failed to adequately address antisemitism on campus, she said officials used the issue as “a smokescreen for a targeted, ideologically motivated assault” and violated Harvard’s First Amendment rights.
The ruling bars the government from freezing or terminating Harvard’s current or future grants.
A White House spokesperson called Burroughs an “activist Obama-appointed judge” and said the administration would appeal, arguing Harvard has no constitutional right to taxpayer funding.
