In a devastating loss to motorsport, Jochen Rindt was killed in a violent practice crash at the 1970 Italian Grand Prix On This Day 55 years ago.
A charismatic draw both on track and off it, Rindt popularised motorsport in Austria; as well as hosting the motoring tv show Motorama, his presence and success helped lead to the construction of both the Österreichring and Salzburgring, and the curation of an annual car show that would evolve into today's Essen Motor Show. Articulate, safety conscious and business savvy, he was every inch the modern, cosmopolitan racing driver while remaining a thrilling, often sideways sight on track.
He would be F1's only posthumous world champion. 🌟
