The first F1 World Drivers Champion was crowned On This Day 75 years ago. 🥳 27 starters lined up on the four-wide grid of the 1950 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, with Juan Manuel Fangio leading the field and the championship by a scant two points from Alfa Romeo team-mate Nino Farina. 🤏
A poor start versus Farina's fantastic one had been a disadvantage but not a death knell to Fangio's hopes, but 23 laps in his 158's gearbox failed; he took over Piero Taruffi's car and charged after Farina in the lead, needing third or better for the title. Eventually running second, Fangio looked to be doing enough - until this 158 dropped a valve, putting him out for a second time! 😫
Farina had to not only survive the last half of an already highly attritional race to take the crown, but win it outright - and win it he did! Nino Farina, the 43-year-old who looked to have lost his best racing years to World War Two, was the 1950 F1 World Champion. 🇮🇹
