For Sun Devil Football defensive tackle Jacob Rich Kongaika (#98), the game has been more than just a sport — it has been a lifeline through some of the most challenging times of his life, and ultimately, a source of renewed joy. After playing two seasons with the University of Arizona, Kongaika accepted an invitation from Sun Devil Football Head Coach Kenny Killingham to join the team. When he was getting set for his first spring training in Tempe, tragedy struck. Kongaika endured heartbreaking loss when his cousin was killed in an auto accident. Soon after, his father faced a serious medical scare. Through it all, Kongaika found strength in the words of his mother, who encouraged him to commit fully to whichever path he chose — and to love that choice. That decision gave him both purpose and resilience as he and his five siblings worked through grief and adversity. Football became a way to rebuild his spirit and rediscover happiness.
