A group of LGBTQ+ teens who were expelled from the Iowa Capitol due to a dispute over bathrooms are settling their lawsuit with the state for $85,000. The lawsuit, filed in 2022, involved a March 2020 trip by the advocacy group Iowa Safe Schools, which brought about 150 Iowa students and chaperones to the Capitol to meet with legislators. The group's then-executive director, Nate Monson, told the Register at the time that Iowa State Patrol troopers told several of the students they couldn't use one of the restrooms and had to use a gender-neutral restroom. After Monson intervened, arguing those directions were inconsistent with state law, the entire group was ordered to leave, according to their complaint. The lawsuit brought claims from five members of the group, including Monson and several students, accusing the state and five troopers of gender identity discrimination, harassment and retaliation.
