Harp seal pups are born on the Arctic pack ice, wrapped in thick white coats that camouflage them against the snow and shield them from the cold. For about 12 days, their mothers nurse them with some of the richest milk in the world, enabling the pups to double their weight. Once weaned, they survive on their fat reserves until their sleek, waterproof coats grow in, transforming them into capable young seals. Life in the Arctic is never easy, and not every pup survives. Yet despite their soft, downy appearance, harp seals are tougher than they look. As long as the sea ice endures and their ecosystems remain intact, these fluffy survivors will keep defying the odds.
