Students in Associate Teaching Professor Randy Piland’s new class, “Drones and Society,” are building and flying drones — learning the tech inside and out while exploring how drones impact everything from rescue missions to real estate. Some, like computer science major Ali Steele ’27, brought FAA certifications and summer flight experience with them. Others? They’re piloting for the very first time. That mix of skills is exactly what makes the class soar — combining hands-on builds with big-picture conversations about how drones are shaping the world around us. From mapping to media, deliveries to disaster response, drones are changing what’s possible in so many industries.
