Our ESA/Hubble Picture of the Week features a galaxy that’s hard to categorise 🤔
🔴 NGC 2775 has a smooth centre devoid of gas like an elliptical galaxy. It also has a dusty ring with patchy star clusters like a spiral galaxy. So is it elliptical, spiral, or neither?
🔴 Because we can only view it from one angle, it’s hard to say. However, some researchers classify it as a lenticular galaxy – a type of galaxy with features common to both spiral and elliptical galaxies.
🔴 It is not yet known how lenticular galaxies form. However, NGC 2775 may have merged with other galaxies in the past – it has a tail of hydrogen gas (invisible in this image) which could be the remnant of galaxies absorbed by NGC 2775.
