The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has witnessed a white dwarf eating a piece of a Pluto-like object 🍽️
🔴 The white dwarf has about half the mass of our Sun packed into a body about the size of the Earth. Scientists think its immense gravity dragged in and tore apart an icy Pluto analogue from the system’s version of the Kuiper Belt.
🔴 Hubble’s Cosmic Origins Spectrograph was used to analyse the composition of the object as its pieces fell onto the white dwarf. Surprisingly, the fragments were mostly water ice 🧊
🔴 This means they must have been part of a massive object that formed far beyond the Kuiper Belt analogue – possibly an exo-Pluto!
