A stellar nursery like no other ✨
@esawebb has zoomed in on Sagittarius B2 — the most massive star-forming cloud in the Milky Way.
Just a few hundred light-years from our galaxy’s central black hole, this cosmic giant holds only 10% of the galactic centre’s gas… yet gives birth to half its stars.
With Webb’s near-infrared and mid-infrared eyes, astronomers can peer through thick veils of dust to spot newborn stars, glowing gas, and cocoons of material still too dense for light to escape.
Swipe to see:
- Webb’s NIRCam view — where colourful stars shine through.
- Webb’s MIRI view — where glowing dust reveals stellar nurseries in striking detail.
By comparing these images, scientists hope to uncover why Sagittarius B2 is so extraordinarily productive — and what its secrets can teach us about star formation across the galaxy.
