Thirteen thousand years ago, someone in Ice Age Germany ground a copper mineral into a vivid powder and left the faintest signature of blue. On a small stone from the Final Paleolithic site of Mühlheim-Dietesheim, archaeologists have now identified microscopic flecks of azurite, the earliest confirmed blue pigment in Europe and among the oldest anywhere on Earth.
Blue is rare in nature because few minerals produce a true blue hue. That rarity makes this find extraordinary. Using micro–X-ray fluorescence, particle-induced X-ray emission, and high-magnification imaging, the team showed the pigment is human-made azurite, likely sourced from local copper-rich geology in the Rhine-Main region. The residue sits on the concave interior of a bowl-shaped stone, suggesting deliberate processing rather than accidental staining.
