Thirteen thousand years ago, someone in Ice Age Germany ground a copper mineral into a vivid powder and left the faintest signature of blue. On a small stone from the Final Paleolithic site of Mühlheim-Dietesheim, archaeologists have now identified microscopic flecks of azurite, the earliest confirmed blue pigment in Europe and among the oldest anywhere on Earth.⁠ ⁠ Blue is rare in nature because few minerals produce a true blue hue. That rarity makes this find extraordinary. Using micro–X-ray fluorescence, particle-induced X-ray emission, and high-magnification imaging, the team showed the pigment is human-made azurite, likely sourced from local copper-rich geology in the Rhine-Main region.
