Two Black women. Two eras. One shared legacy. Honored to have met Bernie tonight the first Black woman to ever serve as photographer for a mayor of New Orleans during the Mitch Landrieu administration. Now, years later, I stand as the second, serving Mayor Elect Helena Moreno. When I say representation matters, this is exactly what I mean. Black women have always been behind the lens, capturing the truth, the beauty, and the resilience of this city but rarely are we recognized for shaping how the story of New Orleans is told. This moment isn’t just about me; it’s about every young Black girl who picked up a camera and dreamed of telling stories that move people. It’s about breaking through spaces that once felt unreachable and leaving the door wide open for whoever comes next.
