Thousands of Iowans who rely on SNAP benefits could go without food aid next month because of the federal government shutdown, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services warned.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently notified the state, and every state across the country, to not issue Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program benefits in November, according to a news release issued Oct. 17, by Iowa HHS.
The federal government shutdown continues as a resolution remains elusive amid a bitter stalemate between Democrats and Republicans in Congress.
In Iowa, the program supports approximately 131,000 households every month — with federally funded benefits totaling about $45 million.
