A father and son are now both PhD scholars at the University of Glasgow. Montel Gordon and Paul Gordon have each joined UofG’s James McCune Smith PhD Scholarship programme, pursuing research rooted in lived experience and cultural insight.
Montel, who joined in 2022 was in the first cohort of JMS PhD scholars, said: “I think the programme has been everything I imagined and more… What the programme has given me is confidence to grow, to develop and to try new things.”
This month, Paul begins his own PhD and reflected on the role reversal: “I remember taking Montel to school for the first time. Now he says to me, ‘I’ll take you to school.’ The teacher became the pupil.”
The programme is named after Dr James McCune Smith, the first African American to earn a medical degree who studied at the University of Glasgow in the 1830s. The James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships fund Black UK-domiciled students to undertake research in any discipline.
