Rain fell hard across Des Moines in the early hours of July 30, 2024. Wind gusts neared 60 mph, turning the streets slick and dim under the red-blue pulse of squad car lights.
On the city’s southeast side, officers were searching for a man accused of violating a no-contact order. Minutes later, gunfire cut through the storm, and senior police officer Jesse Schneider’s life veered in a direction he never expected.
More than a year later, Schneider, who was hit in the back of his shoulder by friendly fire, said he decided to leave the Des Moines police force.
He now helps other first responders and veterans as a volunteer with Giving Back Outdoors, an Iowa-based group that organizes hunts and other outdoor activities for people recovering from injuries and trauma.
