Happy Birthday to our founding director Grace McCann Morley! 🎂 Today, we’re revisiting the remarkable legacy of a woman who helped shape art history. Morley was a trailblazer in the modern art world whose progressive vision can still be seen at SFMOMA today. Throughout her tenure from 1935 to 1958, Morley pushed for cultural democracy—she believed art should be available to everyone and that museums served to help the broad public understand the art of their time. Under her directorship, the museum not only gave a voice to female and local Bay Area artists, but also expanded modern art on the West Coast. This included some of the earliest solo exhibitions for Abstract Expressionists such as Clyfford Still, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Above all, Morley was a game changer.
