As our autumn graduations wrap up, we came across this remarkable story of lifelong learning.
Maryette Watson began studying modern literature at Trinity in 1953 but left before graduating to marry, as was common at the time. However, at age 90, she recently graduated with First Class Honours in English Literature from the theopenuniversity, supported by her multi-generational family and driven by a lifelong love of reading.
Her journey spans three universities, decades of change, and a deep connection to Trinity, where she lived in Trinity Halls, and she has strong memories of the poet Donald Davie, who was her tutor over this time. “He was so wonderful,” she says. “He wanted to hear all our thoughts.”
Maryette’s story is a beautiful reminder that it’s never too late to pursue a dream.
