Despite this peculiarity, she managed to lead a largely normal life: Josephine Myrtle Corbin was born on May 12, 1868, in Lincoln County, Tennessee, the third child of Nancy (34) and William (25) Corbin. The birth was uncomplicated, the daughter was healthy, and after just three weeks weighed ten pounds. However, she was essentially doubled below the hips. Josephine had two separate pelvises, a uterus, vagina, etc., also duplicated, and each of her outer legs was connected to one of the inner, narrower legs. From the age of 13, her father, as was quite common at the time, had her perform in a freak show. But she apparently enjoyed the attention, amused herself with the audience, and earned $450 a week, a considerable sum for the poor family. Her performances were so successful that other showmen tried to copy her with fake four-legged animals.
