🚨In February 1931, the college moved into its new campus on Montezuma Mesa: seven Mission/Spanish-Revival buildings around what’s now the Main Quad.
• The move to the mesa campus was funded in part by New Deal / WPA federal programs during the Great Depression.
• In 1935 the California Legislature dropped “Teachers” from the name, so San Diego State Teachers College became San Diego State College.
•The iconic building Hepner Hall was completed in 1931 and remains a symbolic image of the campus.
• The athletic stadium Aztec Bowl, constructed during this era (WPA-era) on campus, became home to SDSC’s football team.
• During the 1936 football season the Aztecs went 6-1-1 and were conference champions.
• The architectural style of the campus during the 1930s was distinctly Mission/Spanish Revival, contributing to the cohesive historic district feel on Mesa.
