Federal prosecutors have charged Brendan Munro Thompson, also known as Bella Thompson, with assaulting federal officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon in connection with an Oct. 23 incident in which an individual attempted to reverse a U-Haul truck into personnel at Coast Guard Island in Alameda. The Coast Guard opened fire in response, shooting Thompson in the back and injuring at least one bystander.
The violent incident capped off a day in which thousands mostly peacefully protested President Trump’s administration’s planned immigration “surge” in San Francisco and Oakland. While the Trump administration called off the Bay Area operation, the incident with the U-Haul raised concerns about the future of events in the region.
