OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and his husband, Oliver Mulherin, are among the key backers of Preventive, a new San-Francisco–based startup aiming to use gene-editing technology to prevent hereditary diseases before birth.
The couple, who welcomed a son eight months ago, have invested alongside other private funders as the company positions itself as a public-benefit corporation focused on “correcting devastating genetic conditions.” Mulherin, a software developer, said Altman was the driving force behind their decision to support the project.
Preventive has raised $30 million from private backers and is reportedly seeking a country where embryo editing is legal to conduct early tests — a process that remains highly regulated and widely debated internationally.
Gene editing in embryos is still prohibited in the US, UK, and many other nations due to ongoing ethical and safety concerns.
