Former MLB player turned first round NFL draft pick: on the surface Hayden Hurst has found success professionally in two different sports. But behind the jersey, Hurst has faced some dark battles.
After getting drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates MLB team straight out of high school, Hurst struggled with intense anxiety and the yips, which ended his baseball career. He switched sports and then played college football at South Carolina, ultimately being drafted to the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. Unfortunately, his mental health struggles followed him.
Hurst was so desperate to numb his feelings that he turned to drinking, pills, and cocaine to try and cope. He stated βat that point, I wanted out. I just thought for so long that I just wanted it to be over.β Overcome by his internal battle, Hurst attempted to take his own life.
