#OnThisDay 1897, a view of Queen Street looking east, at the present day Queen and Dufferin intersection — the Gladstone Hotel can be seen just beyond the rail tracks. The second and third images show the same area a year later in 1898. 112 years later the 70-metre underpass beneath the rail bridge that connects Dufferin Street to Queen Street opened. The new tunnel ended the "Dufferin jog", where buses and cars detoured around Gladstone Avenue and Peel Avenue to go north or south on Dufferin. In the record descriptions below, the term 'subway' means railway underpasses. 1. Queen Street subway, looking east, November 17, 1897. Fonds 200, Series 376, File 2, Item 8. 2. Queen Street subway, looking east, reconstructed, 1898. Fonds 200, Series 376, File 2, Item 3. 3. Queen Street subway, as reconstructed, looking west. 1898. Fonds 200, Series 376, File 2, Item 1. #TOhistory #TorontoArchives
