“Parasocial” has officially been named Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the Year, describing the one-sided relationships people form with someone they don’t actually know.
The term was first introduced in 1956 by sociologists who noticed people developing emotional connections with personalities they only saw through screens.
Cambridge says the word surged in searches this year as more people discussed how online creators, podcasts, and digital communities can create these one-way attachments
