A donut, a giant eye, a cosmic whirlpool... what do you see? Captured by NASAHubble, this galaxy named NGC 2775 left astronomers puzzled. Its features are difficult to categorize, as they don’t fit neatly into any singular galaxy type. Scientists categorize galaxies based on their shapes, physical features, the activity in their central region, and other characteristics. For instance, our own Milky Way is a spiral galaxy, a category defined by the presence of spiral arms around a dense central concentration of stars. But NGC 2775 has features of multiple galaxy types, so not all astronomers agree on its categorization. It has a smooth, featureless center like an elliptical galaxy, but a dusty ring like a spiral galaxy. Some evidence suggests that NGC 2775 might have merged with other galaxies in the past, which would explain its odd, hybrid qualities. Most astronomers classify it as a flocculent spiral galaxy, a type of spiral galaxy with poorly-defined, discontinuous arms. Ima...
