Jerusalem fended off a fierce second-half onslaught from Cluj to come out on top 89-101 and improve to 6-2, while the Romanian outfit dropped to 4-4 after wiping out a 19-point deficit only to fall short in a frantic climax.
Hapoel made a flying start and steamrolled into a 21-38 lead in the opening period, breaking the club record for points scored in a single quarter. The visitors shot 6-of-7 from downtown to silence the home crowd. Cluj regained some composure in the second, but Hapoel kept up the pressure and carved out a 43-58 advantage at halftime. In a rip-roaring third quarter, Cluj fired on all cylinders and turned the game on its head to take a 75-71 lead as Daron Russel hit top gear. Hapoel nosed in front 75-76 ahead of the final 10 minutes and the lead then changed hands several times in a see-saw fourth quarter before the Israeli side found an extra gear in the home straight.
