Argyria is a rare condition characterized by gray/blue dislocation of the skin caused by chronic exposure to silver. This condition may be diffuse or localized, depending on the route of exposure. Diffuse argyria is caused by systemic silver exposure, most commonly in the form of colloidal silver ingestion. Alternatively, localized disease has also been reported due to topical limited exposure. Skin discoloration is caused by the combined effects of chemical reduction of deposited silver compounds in the skin and the stimulation of melanocytes. This case of argyria was in an elderly man who experienced undesired skin discoloration secondary to chronic ingestion of silver salts. As silver-containing compounds and drugs are widespread in the fields of alternative medicine, industry, and fashion, it is exceedingly important for emergency physicians to be able to identify toxic exposures and educate patients on their chronic effects. #argyria #biology #chemistry #science #colloidals...
