In their first-year seminar this semester, students tied art and science together to examine whether microbes were friends or foes. Under the direction of Pavithra Vivekanand, professor of biology, students created art on agar plates using bacteria. These colorful designs are E. coli manipulated to express the same color-producing proteins naturally made by reef-building coral and sea anemones.
Throughout the course, students discovered that microbes aren't all bad. In fact, we have so many living on and in us that play a crucial role in maintaining our health, as well as plant and animal health.
