Once a familiar winter visitor at feeders across the continent, this bright, heavy-billed finch has lost more than 90% of its population since 1970. For many, their less frequent visits are one of the most telling signs of the bird-decline story.
A group of researchers across North America has been banding and tracking these birds to understand what’s driving the decline—habitat change, food shifts, disease, and window collisions.
They recently launched a new inaturalistorg project to collect one piece of the puzzle they can’t get on their own: reporting any Evening Grosbeak window strike, banded or not.
If you live where grosbeaks still pass through, any observation could help researchers connect routes and spot pressure points.
