The camera body matters, but the right lenses will have a huge impact on your results. If you are shooting basketball indoors, you need lenses that handle low light well. Lenses in the f2.8 to f4 range from about 24 to 200mm will give you enough reach and speed to freeze action on dim courts. If you are shooting football outdoors, you will have more light and a much larger field. Look at lenses that start around f2.8 and extend into the 200 to 400mm range or longer so you can cover play across the pitch while keeping your subject sharp and clean.
