San Diego City College has officially broken ground on its first-ever student housing community — a major step toward addressing housing insecurity for thousands of local students. The project will bring over 280 new units and nearly 800 student beds to the heart of downtown by 2028, offering affordable, apartment-style living alongside study spaces, wellness centers, and community areas designed to help students stay enrolled and succeed.
This marks one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by the district, aiming to support veterans, low-income students, former foster youth, and anyone struggling with high San Diego rent. It also represents a big shift: City College students will finally have an on-campus living option for the first time in more than a century of the school’s existence.
Do you think San Diego should build more student housing like this — or is this project already too much for the downtown area?
