Birds hit glass for different reasons, and both problems require different solutions. Here’s a quick guide to understand what’s happening at your window, and what you can do about it. Territorial Aggression Some birds, like Northern Cardinals, American Robins, and Blue Jays, see their own reflection and think it’s a rival. What this looks like: • Repeated tapping and pecking at the same small spot • A single bird returning repeatedly • Mostly happens in spring and summer Solution: Temporarily (about a week or so) blocking the reflection by placing cardboard, paper, soap, or a temporary film on the outside of the glass will help. Window Collisions These happen when birds simply don’t see the glass at all and collide with it. What this looks like: • Sudden, fast impact • A thud followed by the bird on the ground, stunned or dead • Multiple species, any time of day • Peak seasons: spring and fall migration, but also other seasons, including winter Solution: Properly spaced ...
