Julie Waters has been sharing the story of her Vietnamese family who came to the US with nothing and started over in tiny Crowell, Texas, a farming town of around 769 people. Her parents arrived as refugees after the Vietnam War in the mid-1970s and built a new life from scratch. In her videos she talks about “growing up Asian in a little bitty Texas town,” often being the only Asian family around, but remembering Crowell as a place where neighbors knew their names, classmates made them feel included, and her family felt loved and welcomed instead of out of place. Her parents pushed her to chase every opportunity they never had. Waters was born in Crowell, went on to graduate valedictorian, attended Texas A&M, then finished law school at Boston University, describing it all as her family’s version of the American dream.
