Diagnosed with a heart condition when she was a child, Shivani underwent surgery at Boston Children's Hospital (BCH). Years later, as a student at Harvard's School of Engineering, she spent the summer interning in BCH’s cardiology department.
“It felt very full circle to be working at the cardiology department here, doing research and modeling disease conditions similar to mine,” she said. “I think there's a little bit of everything that has come together for me, and with this project it just feels very personal.”
In previous courses at Harvard, Shivani explored research on everything from butterfly wings to laser-microfluidics. Working off her summer internship at BCH, her research focus now is on using stem cells to model cardiac diseases, which could pave the way for individualized treatments.
