Transition tension?
The Elizabeth street garden is undergoing a transition — from a garden to an official park. At issue: the Mayor’s promise to preserve this one acre patch of green even though pro-housing advocates had proposed apartments here instead. Mayor-Elect Mamdani had vowed to revive the fight to build affordable housing there.
First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro insists it’s a win-win that can help the Mamdani administration. Three nearby sites including an empty lot on Grand Street and a section of The Bowery — have been green lit for affordable housing instead of the garden. Mastro also said that the mayor plans to make appointments on major boards before vacating office. If appointments are made on the Rent Guidelines Board, it could effectively block Mamdani’s promise to freeze the rent for tenants in rent stabilized units.
