Mondays are for the Birds is back in full effect with our friendly friend from down on the Plains, Cas! Cas, our Barred Owl, came to us from Auburn Raptor Center in 2011 after being deemed non-releasable due to a broken wing, and she can be found in the Southern Bayou habitat near the train! Barred Owls, like Cas, are most found throughout the Eastern United States, preferring forests near water sources. Their diet mainly consists of small mammals, but Cas has been known to crunch down on a crawfish she catches from the freshwater source in her habitat from time to time. Barred Owls are most well-known for their “who cooks for you?” call, though owls' “hooting” is typically for communication with other owls (for courtship, establishing territory, or to communicate with their young), so we don’t recommend “hooting” at Cas.
