The world’s first social media ban for teens under 16 just went into effect in Australia — and the rest of the world is watching.
“Heaven forbid they might talk to one another a bit more, pick up the phone and have a chat rather than just being obsessed with the screen,” South Australia’s Premier Peter Malinauskas told CBS News’ ramyinocencio .
pmalinauskasmp , who was the political catalyst for this ban to begin with, said that it was actually his wife who read a book called The Anxious Generation, and who then urged him to “do something.”
Malinauskas says social media companies have been conducting a “global experiment” with “addictive algorithms” that have led to dramatic spikes in childhood depression and anxiety but credits them with compliance with the new law.
Australia’s highest court has accepted a legal challenge from two 15-year olds who assert the ban violates their freedom of communication, which could be heard as early as February.
